Liverpool’s miserable season sank to new depths as the Reds suffered a humbling 4-1 Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven at Anfield on Wednesday.

The result deepened an already severe crisis, leaving manager Arne Slot facing mounting pressure from fans and pundits alike.

PSV stunned the home side early, as Ivan Perisic converted a penalty following a questionable Virgil van Dijk handball in the sixth minute.

Liverpool’s response was swift, with Dominik Szoboszlai equalising within ten minutes, but the goal failed to inspire the Reds into sustained dominance.

The second half quickly turned against Liverpool. Guus Til’s fine finish put PSV ahead, before Couhaib Driouech scored twice, including a clinical stoppage-time strike, to complete the rout.

Slot admitted feeling “guilty” over Liverpool’s slump, describing their form as “ridiculous,” yet the Dutchman has offered little clarity on how to arrest the slide.

Empty seats in the closing stages served as a stark indicator of fan frustration and growing scepticism.

Liverpool’s fragility was evident throughout. Alexander Isak, the club’s record signing, was left on the bench, while defensive errors and a lack of intensity repeatedly undermined the team.

Van Dijk, who called for players to take responsibility, was directly involved in the penalty that opened the scoring.

Despite Szoboszlai’s early equaliser and a near-miss from Van Dijk, Liverpool could not sustain pressure. The defensive collapse continued in the 56th minute when Guus Til capitalised on a sublime Mauro Junior pass.

Driouech then added a brace after errors from Ibrahima Konate and Sergino Dest, sealing a farcical conclusion to the evening.

The defeat marks Liverpool’s first home loss in the opening phase of the Champions League in five years and raises pressing questions about the team’s ability to compete on multiple fronts.
