Lagos farmers receive agricultural training aimed at boosting food security, as the Lagos State Agricultural Input Supply Authority (LAISA) engaged over 500 farmers and fishermen in the Ikorodu Division in a capacity-building forum on Sunday.

Held at the Ikorodu Local Government Secretariat, the event marked a significant shift in the state’s approach to supporting local agriculture.

LAISA’s General Manager, Olufolake Oluyemi, said the forum was more than just a workshop—it was a direct engagement platform designed to understand and address the unique challenges of farmers in the area.

“We recognise that the challenges faced by farmers in Ikorodu are unique compared to those in Badagry or Epe. The era of LAISA assuming it knows your needs is over,” Oluyemi said during her address on the theme ‘Harvesting Success: Innovative Solutions for Lagos Farmers’.

She emphasised that the session was designed to listen, learn, and co-create solutions with the participants.

Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, who was represented by the Director of Agribusiness, Aramide Gansalo, reinforced the state’s focus on self-sufficiency.

She highlighted the importance of quality agricultural inputs in achieving sustainable farming outcomes.

“Food security is not just about agriculture — it connects directly to our economic stability, public health, and urban resilience,” Olusanya said. “For our farmers, access to certified, high-yield seeds, proper fertilisers, and modern tools is essential. That is where LAISA plays a pivotal role.”

Femi Oke, Chairman of the All Nigerian Farmers Association (Lagos State chapter), commended both LAISA and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems for their consistent commitment to the welfare of farmers and fishermen in the state.

He described the forum as a “necessary response to the evolving realities of food production in urban and peri-urban settings.”

The initiative is part of a broader state strategy to strengthen local agricultural systems, especially in underserved communities, through targeted intervention and training.
