Lagos State celebrates World School Games champions as Governor Sanwo-Olu honours students for outstanding performances in Doha, Qatar

Lagos State is set to celebrate a group of young athletes who excelled at the 2026 World School Games Olympia in Doha, Qatar, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu hosting a reception in their honour.

The athletes, representing six Lagos schools, delivered record-breaking performances across the U-11, U-13, and U-15 categories in athletics, football, and swimming.

Participating schools include Saint Saviour’s School, Grange School, Riverbank School, British International School, Lagos Preparatory & Secondary School, and Corona School, all of which earned global recognition for their skill and sportsmanship.

Saint Saviour’s School emerged as the overall winner in the U-11 category, while Grange School secured second place in the U-13 division and third in the U-15 category, demonstrating depth and consistent excellence across age groups.

The planned reception will also honour Team Lagos athletes who represented Nigeria at the African Youth Games in Angola in December 2025, highlighting the state’s growing influence in youth sports development across Africa.

Many of these athletes began their journey at the National Youth Games, earning national selection before making an impact on continental and global stages.

Governor Sanwo-Olu described the achievements as a watershed moment for Lagos State, praising the discipline, teamwork, and resilience of the students.

“These achievements are a source of immense pride to the Government and people of Lagos State. They reflect the dedication of our young athletes and the steady revitalisation of the school sports ecosystem in Lagos, supported by committed parents, educators, coaches, and administrators,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Lekan Fatodu, Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, added that the performances showcased the results of structured youth development and investment in school sports.

“This historic performance by our schools and young athletes is a powerful demonstration of what is possible when talent meets structure, vision, and opportunity,” Fatodu said.

The government emphasised that the reception is designed not only to celebrate excellence but also to inspire thousands of young students across Lagos, reinforcing the message that sporting success can complement academic achievement when supported by vision and commitment.
