Lafarge Africa Ogun Tree Planting Day 2025 sees 1 million trees planted across 20 LGAs to tackle climate change and support environmental stewardship

Lafarge Africa Ogun Tree Planting Day 2025 marked a pivotal moment in environmental action, as Lafarge Africa Plc joined hands with the Ogun State Government to plant one million trees across 20 local government areas.

The initiative was part of the state’s Ogun Tree Planting Day, observed every second Saturday of August with the theme “Grow Trees, Sustain Life.”

The tree-planting ceremony also included the beautification of the second entrance to the Ogun State Secretariat in Oke‑Mosan, Abeokuta, reinforcing the visual and ecological importance of the project.

At the event, Lafarge Africa’s Group Managing Director/CEO, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, represented by Gabriel Pollyn (Head of Sustainability and Sponsorships), highlighted the initiative’s alignment with the company’s decarbonisation agenda and quarry rehabilitation efforts.

“Tree planting is one of the most effective ways to mitigate the impacts of climate change… At Lafarge Africa, we view every sapling as a living investment in our environment, economy, and future generations,” Pollyn affirmed.

The company also pledged to plant 150,000 native trees over five years across Ogun and Oyo states.

Ogun’s Forestry Commissioner, Taiwo Oludotun, emphasized the urgency of local climate challenges such as prolonged dry spells, flooding, and rising temperatures:

“We are not just planting trees; we are planting hope, health, and the future of our state… These are not distant threats; they are local problems requiring local solutions.”

Beyond the initial planting, both Lafarge Africa and the Ogun Government committed to nurturing and maintaining the saplings to ensure long-term survival and ecosystem impact.

This approach reflects a move from symbolic gestures to strategic, sustainable reforestation—with targeted planting in flood-prone zones, urban heat islands, and industrial areas.
