INEC clarifies Kwali polling unit vote, correcting inflated results to 121 after human error, assuring transparency and accuracy in FCT elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has clarified that the disputed vote count at Kuroko Health Centre polling unit in Yangoji Ward, Kwali Area Council, Federal Capital Territory, was the result of human error and not manipulation.

A report circulating online claimed that a political party secured 1,219 votes in a polling unit with only 345 registered voters and 213 accredited voters during the recent Area Council election. INEC dismissed the claim as false and misleading.

According to a statement signed by the commission, the Presiding Officer initially recorded 122 votes for the All Progressives Congress (APC) but later identified a tallying mistake.

An open recount corrected the figure to 121 votes, which was then entered officially into the Result Viewing Portal and used at ward and Area Council collation.

INEC emphasised that the commission’s Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) prevents over-voting by validating entries against accredited voter numbers.

The commission noted that any attempt to enter 1,219 votes would have been automatically rejected.

“The official result recorded and uploaded from the polling unit shows that the political party in question scored 121 votes, not 1,219 as alleged on social media,” the statement said, adding that party agents at the polling unit confirmed and signed the final result.

INEC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and encouraged voters to rely on verified information provided through its electoral technology systems.
