Kano trailer crash kills over 30 people. Governor Abba Yusuf promises free medical care and support for victims’ families

A trailer crash in Kwanar Barde, Gezawa Local Government Area, Kano State, has claimed the lives of more than 30 people and left numerous others injured, authorities confirmed on Sunday, 8 February 2026.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf described the incident as “heartbreaking” and vowed comprehensive support for victims and their families.

The crash occurred early on Sunday morning as the trailer was travelling towards Gujungu in neighbouring Jigawa State.

Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, the Director General of Media and Publicity at Kano Government House, stated that reckless driving was reported as the primary cause of the accident.

Governor Yusuf directed the Ministry of Health to provide free and prompt medical care to all injured individuals and instructed the Office of the Special Adviser on Humanitarian Affairs to ensure the families of the deceased receive immediate assistance.

The governor offered prayers for the repose of the victims’ souls and strength for the bereaved families.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as emergency responders worked to rescue survivors.

Several victims were transported to nearby hospitals, highlighting the urgent need for improved road safety and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations across the state.

This tragedy follows similar fatal collisions in Nigeria, including a head-on crash on the Potiskum–Damaturu highway in Yobe State that claimed six lives.

Road safety experts have urged the federal and state governments to implement stricter traffic laws and public awareness campaigns to prevent further loss of life.

Authorities have launched a formal investigation into the Kano trailer crash and continue to appeal to motorists to exercise extreme caution on major highways.
