Kano CDC reports increase in respiratory infections, urges calm, and advises preventive measures while confirming no new COVID-19 variant

Kano State Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed a rise in respiratory infection cases across the state, urging residents to remain calm and avoid panic.

In a public health advisory issued on Thursday, the agency noted an increase in upper respiratory tract infections, with symptoms including cough, sore throat, fever, and nasal congestion reported in multiple communities.

Prof. Muhammad Abbas clarified that the development does not indicate the emergence of any new COVID-19 variant in Kano.

“Most of the reported cases are mild and usually resolve within seven to 10 days without serious complications,” he said.

Residents are advised to seek medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen, especially in cases of high fever lasting more than three days, chest pain, or difficulty breathing.

Vulnerable groups include children under five, elderly persons, pregnant women, and individuals with underlying conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or HIV.

The KNCDC urged adherence to preventive measures, including regular handwashing, proper cough etiquette, adequate indoor ventilation, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals.

Residents are also encouraged to ensure routine immunisations are up to date to curb the spread of infections.
