Kano healthcare upgrade receives ₦24bn via World Bank-backed IMPACT project to renovate PHCs and expand maternal, child, and rural health services

Kano healthcare upgrade is gaining momentum as the state government, in partnership with the World Bank’s IMPACT project, commits over ₦24 billion to the renovation and expansion of Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across all 44 local government areas.

Flagging off the initiative in Takai LGA, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Yusuf, highlighted the administration’s focus on grassroots healthcare.

“This is part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s agenda to rebuild the foundation of our healthcare system,” he said.

The upgrade includes the construction of staff quarters in rural PHCs to tackle healthcare worker shortages and ensure round-the-clock services.

As part of the intervention:

25,000 to 30,000 antenatal kits, and
6,000 delivery kits, including 500 Caesarean kits,

are distributed monthly and free to pregnant women.

Women also receive free screening for HIV, hepatitis, syphilis, and sickle cell, aligning with Kano’s antenatal care laws.

In addition, Governor Yusuf launched the distribution of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) for children suffering from severe acute malnutrition — a ₦1 billion initiative with UNICEF.

Dr. Yusuf revealed that 191 PHCs are currently being renovated. “This is clear evidence of our administration’s commitment to rebuilding healthcare from the ground up,” he stated.

He praised the governor’s consistent release of counterpart funds, which has significantly improved immunisation coverage.

With support from the IMPACT project Immunisation Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transforming Services the state is making transformative strides in maternal and child health.
