JJ Gabriel Manchester United exit request is formal, the 15-year-old seeking free-agent status while the club says it can still keep him

The request was first reported by The Telegraph on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, and has been confirmed in substance by The Guardian, BBC Sport, Sky Sports News and The Athletic.

United have not accepted the notice. Club officials say the player is registered until the end of the season and that a youth registration can be cancelled only if the club, the player and a parent or carer agree.

If they do not, the Premier League can issue a binding decision. United believe the situation can still be repaired. Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox are involved in talks with the family.

JJ Gabriel has been at the club since he was 11. He cannot sign a scholarship until he turns 16 on 6 October 2026, or a professional contract until he is 17.

Last season he was the youngest winner of United’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award and was named Premier League Under-18 player of the year. Last week he scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut against Sabah.

He had been in line to sit in Michael Carrick’s first-team squad for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie with Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford, which could have made him United’s youngest player. He did not train with the senior group after the request.

The club says it is unsure why the relationship has broken down and that it had shown a path to the first team.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City have been linked with interest in previous windows.

Last summer he stayed after assurances about his pathway. Instagram images were cleared from an account with a large following last week. Motives have not been set out in public by the player.

A 15-year-old cannot walk out of a Premier League academy on a letter alone. United can refuse. The league can be asked to rule. That process, not the headline, will decide whether JJ Gabriel Manchester United years end this week or continue to the summer.
