Renowned Nigerian special effects artist James Akaie has died following injuries sustained during an explosion on a movie set in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The tragic incident occurred in a designated effects preparation area outside the main film set, where Akaie was reportedly experimenting with an unauthorised pyrotechnic setup involving a gas cylinder alongside two assistants.

Movie director and producer James Abinibi confirmed the development in a statement shared on the official Instagram page of RockBottom Flix on Friday.

Abinibi said Akaie was rushed to hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

“The two assistants involved sustained burn injuries and were immediately transferred to a specialist hospital for treatment. They received prompt medical attention and have been confirmed stable as they continue to recover,” the statement added.

Akaie was widely recognised within Nollywood for his technical expertise and contributions to creating realistic special effects, helping elevate production quality in Nigerian films.

Colleagues and industry insiders have described his death as a profound loss for the creative community.
