House of Reps urges security in Kebbe Tambuwal, demanding urgent deployment of personnel to the troubled constituency following a devastating surge in banditry across the area.

The resolution was adopted during Tuesday’s plenary, after Abdussamad Dasuki, who represents the Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency of Sokoto State, moved a motion of urgent public importance.

He described a “tragic deterioration” in the security situation, citing attacks, abductions, and mass displacements that have left the communities in crisis.

Speaking to colleagues, Dasuki revealed that between July and August 2025, bandits repeatedly attacked villages in Kebbe and Tambuwal LGAs. On 12 August, five residents were killed and 28 abducted in Fakku Ward, while on 15 August, neighbouring Sangi Ward came under siege, forcing villagers to flee.

Similar attacks followed in Ungushi, Jabo/Kagara, and Tambuwal/Shinfiri wards, with dozens killed or kidnapped, livestock stolen, and thousands displaced.

“These are not isolated incidents,” Dasuki warned. “The attacks have left families broken, children out of school, and farmers afraid to return to their land.” He also noted the growing humanitarian toll, as more people crowd into IDP camps across Sokoto and nearby states.

The House of Reps urges security in Kebbe Tambuwal to be strengthened in light of the worsening cross-border threats from the Sahel region, especially given the tension in Nigeria’s relations with the Niger Republic.

Dasuki warned that Kebbe and Tambuwal now lie dangerously exposed to arms trafficking, insurgent movement, and bandit infiltration from the Sahel corridor.

While commending security forces for past efforts, the lawmaker called for a more robust, intelligence-led response and immediate humanitarian aid for the displaced.

He also referenced Nigeria’s recent remarks at the UN General Assembly, noting that “none of us is safe unless all of us are safe” — a powerful reminder of shared security responsibilities.

Following the motion’s adoption, the House called on the Armed Forces and Police to enhance joint operations in Kuchi and surrounding areas. It urged the Federal Government to rescue kidnapped victims, investigate the attacks, prosecute the perpetrators, and ensure justice is served.

The House also directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other aid groups to provide immediate relief to the displaced. Its Committees on Defence, National Security, and Police Affairs are to report back within two weeks on implementation progress.

Additionally, the Committees on ECOWAS Parliament and Foreign Affairs were tasked with helping to normalise diplomatic relations with the Niger Republic to enable better cross-border intelligence sharing and curb the spread of regional insecurity.
