Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat urges Nigerians to use Ramadan for repentance, moral reflection, and strengthening family values

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, has urged Nigerians to use the fasting period as a time for repentance, moral reflection, and restoring family values.

Hamzat made the call on Sunday during the 19th Annual Ramadan Lecture organised by Abdul-Kabir Ogungbo in honour of his late parents.

The event was held in Ibeju-Lekki and drew religious leaders, community members, and government officials.

The lecture, themed “Divine Justice: Repentance, Restitution and Re-Alignment,” focused on moral responsibility and social harmony.

Hamzat emphasised that individuals should seek forgiveness and correct their actions while they still have the opportunity.

“It is not when you are about to die that you should seek repentance from God. When you still have the strength and energy, repent and stop whatever wrong you are doing,” he said.

According to him, insecurity and distrust in society persist because many people neglect the teachings of the Qur’an and the Bible as well as shared societal values.

Hamzat noted that true faith requires living peacefully with neighbours and treating others with respect and compassion.

The deputy governor also stressed the importance of parents in shaping responsible citizens. He urged them to guide their children in distinguishing between right and wrong and to respect elders.

He called on fathers in particular to fulfil their responsibilities by providing for their families and offering proper moral guidance.

“If we do this, our society will be stronger and more peaceful,” Hamzat added.

Earlier, Ogungbo noted that the Qur’an teaches justice, fairness, and accountability in all human affairs, describing justice in Islam as both a moral and spiritual obligation.
