France World Cup celebration tragedy leaves a 17-year-old girl dead after she fell from a lorry during fans’ victory celebrations

A 17-year-old girl died in northern France on Thursday, 9 July 2026, after she fell from a lorry and was crushed by the vehicle while celebrating France’s 2-0 World Cup quarter-final victory over Morocco in Aulnoye-Aymeries.

The teenager was killed in the northern French town of Aulnoye-Aymeries after she fell from the side of a lorry during celebrations and was struck by the same vehicle, according to reports.

Police said the girl was among thousands of fans celebrating France’s 2-0 victory over Morocco on Thursday, 9 July 2026, when she climbed onto the side of the moving lorry alongside other supporters.

A police spokesperson said efforts were made to save her after the incident, but she was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after midnight.

“She had climbed onto the side of a lorry, along with others, but fell onto the road. The teenager was then crushed by the same vehicle. Attempts were made to revive her, but she was declared dead at the scene soon after midnight,” the spokesperson said.

The lorry driver has been arrested as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident. Police are expected to carry out alcohol and drug tests as part of their inquiries.

Three witnesses were also taken to hospital with minor injuries and symptoms of shock following the incident.

The death occurred as supporters across France poured into streets to celebrate the national team’s progress to the World Cup semi-finals.

France secured their place in the last four after defeating Morocco 2-0 in Boston, with goals from Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé.

French authorities had prepared for large gatherings after previous football celebrations were marred by disorder, including disturbances following Paris Saint-Germain’s UEFA Champions League triumph in May.

However, officials said celebrations after the World Cup victory were largely peaceful, with only a small number of arrests reported in Paris.

Authorities have repeatedly warned supporters against climbing onto moving vehicles during public celebrations, a practice that has become common after major football victories despite the safety risks involved.

The incident has prompted renewed calls for caution during large public gatherings, as millions of fans continue to celebrate France’s World Cup campaign while mourning the loss of a young supporter.
