FIFA is closely monitoring the DR Congo Ebola outbreak as health concerns disrupt the country’s 2026 World Cup preparations

World football governing body FIFA has confirmed it is closely monitoring the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo amid growing concerns over the country’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

FIFA disclosed in a statement to Brazilian outlet UOL Esporte that it remained in contact with the Congolese Football Association and health authorities as the situation develops.

The outbreak, linked to the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, has raised fears over travel restrictions, player safety and the country’s ability to complete scheduled preparations ahead of the tournament.

“FIFA is aware of and monitoring the situation,” the organisation said, adding that it was coordinating with relevant authorities regarding developments surrounding the DR Congo Ebola outbreak.

Reports indicate that the Congolese national team has already cancelled a planned three-day training camp and fan farewell event in Kinshasa because of escalating health concerns.

Despite the disruption, the squad is expected to continue preparations outside the country, with friendly matches scheduled in Belgium and Spain before travelling to the United States for the competition.

The World Health Organization recently declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern following hundreds of suspected infections and more than 100 reported deaths in DR Congo and neighbouring Uganda.

The declaration has intensified international concern, particularly as global sporting events involving cross-border travel approach.

United States authorities have reportedly introduced enhanced airport screening procedures and temporary entry restrictions for travellers arriving from affected countries.

However, exemptions are expected to apply to teams, officials and accredited personnel connected to the World Cup tournament.

The latest health crisis presents another difficult challenge for Congolese football authorities as they attempt to maintain preparations while managing public health concerns surrounding the DR Congo Ebola outbreak.
