FCT doctors receive 13 months of overdue hazard allowance and a one-month wage award, with ARD-FCTA praising Minister Wike’s commitment to healthcare workers

Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory have received payments for 13 months of overdue hazard allowance, alongside a one-month wage award, following approval by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

The Association of Resident Doctors, FCT, expressed gratitude to the minister in a letter dated January 15, 2026. A copy of the letter was made available to correspondents on Tuesday by the Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka.

Signed by the association’s President, Dr George Ebong, and General Secretary, Dr Yusuf Israel Lissa, the letter lauded Wike for “exemplary leadership and commitment to the welfare of healthcare workers.”

The payments, the doctors stated, were recognition of the challenges faced by health workers in the territory.

“This timely intervention underscores your dedication to equity, fairness, and the recognition of the sacrifices made by doctors and other health workers in the course of service in the FCTA,” the letter added.

The association also acknowledged the contributions of other FCT officials involved in facilitating the payments, including the Minister of State for the FCT, Mariya Mahmoud, and the Acting Head of Service, Nancy Nathan. ARD-FCTA stated it remains committed to working with the FCT administration to improve healthcare delivery.

Meanwhile, workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) continue their strike, which began on Monday following the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum.

The industrial action has paralysed government activities across Abuja, with offices including the FCTA Secretariat closed. Security personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Nigeria Police Force have been deployed to prevent access.

The Joint Union Action Congress (JUAC) rejected claims by the FCTA management that most workers’ demands have been met, describing the assertions as “false, premature, and intended to misinform the public and staff.”

The union insisted that wage awards, rural allowance, 2023 promotion arrears, and compliance with Public Service Rules remain unresolved.

JUAC emphasised that the strike is lawful, justified, and fully compliant with labour laws. It further clarified that the appreciation expressed by ARD-FCTA does not represent the collective position of all workers under the union and cannot be interpreted as proof that the issues have been resolved.
