EFCC to appeal court ruling acquitting Ayodele Fayose in N6.9 billion fraud case, says it’s reviewing judgement and preparing for legal action

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed plans to appeal the court ruling that acquitted former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, in the long-standing N6.9 billion fraud case.

The Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, presided over by Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke, discharged and acquitted Fayose of all charges related to alleged money laundering and misappropriation of funds. The judgement was delivered on Wednesday, July 16, 2025.

In a statement released via the Commission’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, the EFCC said it was reviewing the decision and preparing an appeal.

“Sequel to the judgement… acquitting and discharging a former Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayo Fayose… the Commission wishes to state that it is already studying the ruling and preparing for an appeal,” the agency said.

Fayose was re-arraigned on 2 July 2019, alongside his company, Spotless Investment Limited, on an 11-count charge bordering on alleged fraud and money laundering totalling N6.9 billion.

The EFCC insists it remains committed to pursuing justice, stressing that the acquittal does not bring the matter to a close.
