Emmanuel King Okoye dies at 25 after collapsing during a match in Nigeria, sparking grief across Nigerian and Italian football communities

A wave of grief has swept through the football communities in Nigeria and Italy following the tragic death of Nigerian midfielder Emmanuel King Okoye, who collapsed during a match in Nigeria on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old footballer was reportedly visiting family in his home country when the incident occurred during a local game.

According to reports from Notiziario del Calcio and the City of Canicattini Police Department, Okoye sustained a serious head injury after a heavy on-field collision before suddenly collapsing.

Emergency responders quickly administered medical attention at the scene and rushed him to hospital, but he was later confirmed dead despite efforts to revive him.

The tragic incident has deeply affected Italian lower-league football, where Okoye spent several years playing for clubs including Acri, Palmese, Trebisacce, Tricarico Pozzo di Sicar, Campora, San Fili, and Promosport.

His former club Canicattini Calcio paid tribute to the late midfielder, describing him as a committed and disciplined player who was loved within the dressing room.

The club expressed sorrow over his passing, recalling his time with the team during the 2018 to 2019 season and highlighting his passion for the game.

It added that Okoye’s memory would live on through moments shared on and off the pitch, while extending condolences to his family.

The football world has continued to mourn the young midfielder’s sudden death, with tributes pouring in from teammates, clubs, and supporters.
