Dillon Hoogewerf Nigeria switch gains momentum as former Man United youth forward declares interest in playing for Super Eagles

Dutch-born forward Dillon Hoogewerf has declared his willingness to switch international allegiance from the Netherlands to Nigeria, citing heritage, culture and legacy as key motivations.

The 23-year-old, who previously featured for the Netherlands at youth level, confirmed that he is open to representing the Super Eagles through his Nigerian mother.

The Dillon Hoogewerf Nigeria switch conversation has resurfaced after the forward admitted that recent contact had been re-established with Nigerian football authorities.

Dillon Hoogewerf was born in Almere and represented the Netherlands at Under 15 and Under 16 levels.

He later became provisionally cap-tied after featuring in a European Under 17 Championship qualifier against Kosovo in October 2019.

His last international outing came a month later when he scored in a friendly against the United States Under 18 side.

Since then, Dillon Hoogewerf has fallen out of the Dutch youth set-up, prompting reflection on his international future.

Speaking to Voetbal International, Dillon Hoogewerf said Nigeria holds deep personal meaning.

Dillon Hoogewerf described Nigeria as his mother’s country and said he has visited several times with a desire to contribute meaningfully.

The forward added that cultural identity matters to him as much as opportunity.

He suggested that playing for Nigeria could offer a more powerful legacy in African football.

Dillon Hoogewerf also revealed that he had an opportunity to represent Nigeria at 16.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic and his involvement with Dutch youth teams delayed any move.

This season, Dillon Hoogewerf has scored nine goals for SBV Vitesse after joining the club in the summer of 2024.

He previously developed through the academies of Almere City FC, Ajax, Manchester United and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The potential Dillon Hoogewerf Nigeria switch mirrors the path taken by former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, who chose Nigeria despite strong Dutch ties.

William Troost-Ekong went on to captain Nigeria, win bronze at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and feature at the 2018 FIFA World Cup before retiring in 2025.

For Dillon Hoogewerf, the decision now hinges on performance level. The striker admitted he must compete at a higher standard to secure a call-up.
