Dangote Refinery petrol import report dismissed as false; company says cargo is certified feedstock refined to meet Nigerian and global standards

Dangote Refinery petrol import controversy took a new turn on Friday as the company strongly denied media reports alleging it was importing finished petrol with high sulphur content into Nigeria.

The refinery described the claims as false, misleading, and damaging, reaffirming its adherence to both Nigerian and international quality standards.

In a statement, Dangote Petroleum Refinery clarified that the cargo in question was not finished petrol but an intermediate feedstock, which would undergo full refining in its processing units to produce fuels that comply with regulatory specifications.

“As a world-scale complex refinery, we process a wide range of crude oils and intermediate feedstocks,” the company explained. “

This is a standard global practice aimed at optimising production efficiency and ensuring top product quality.”

Operating within a Free Trade Zone, the refinery emphasised that it refines and sells only high-quality fuels that meet or exceed statutory benchmarks.

It added that its export of petroleum products to highly regulated markets such as the United States and Europe demonstrates its commitment to global best practices and quality assurance.

The company further noted that all imported feedstocks are supported by quality certificates, which are transparently shared with regulatory authorities.

“We are also willing to make these documents available to the public in the interest of full transparency and accountability,” the statement read.

Reaffirming its broader mission, Dangote Refinery underscored its dedication to advancing Nigeria’s energy independence while delivering cleaner and safer fuels for both domestic consumption and international markets.

The Dangote Refinery petrol import issue comes at a time when public attention on fuel quality and local refining standards remains intense, but the company insists its operations remain fully compliant and transparent.
