EFCC secures cybercrime convictions in Nigeria as five individuals are sentenced in Ilorin courts, with assets and funds forfeited to the Federal Government

Cybercrime convictions in Nigeria continue to rise as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) intensifies its crackdown on online fraudsters.

The Ilorin Zonal Directorate recently secured the conviction of five individuals before both the Federal and Kwara State High Courts.

The convicted persons include Ayinla Abiodun Abdulmajid, Yusuf Abdulazeez Onimisi, Muhammed Zayad Eneye, Abdulbasit Abdulmumeen, and Victor Onucheyo Anibe. They were charged separately on offences related to fraudulent impersonation and obtaining money under false pretences.

Ayinla and Yusuf were convicted by Justice Abimbola Awogboro at the Federal High Court. Ayinla was sentenced to nine months imprisonment with no option of fine and forfeited \$702, two phones, and a laptop to the government.

Yusuf received a three-month prison sentence, also without an option of fine, and forfeited \$300 and a Samsung S31 phone.

Muhammed was sentenced to 400 hours of community service and forfeited his HP laptop. In the Kwara State High Court, Justice Sulaiman Akanbi sentenced Abdulbasit to two years imprisonment or a fine of N400,000, along with court-ordered sweeping duties for two months. He also forfeited \$145 and an iPhone 11.

Justice Haleema Saleeman sentenced Victor to two years imprisonment or a N600,000 fine. In addition, the court ordered the forfeiture of N4 million, an iPhone 16 Pro Max, and a Samsung phone.

Prosecution lawyers, including Innocent Mbachie and Sesan Ola, presented evidence such as the defendants’ statements and recovered devices. “The facts were clear and undisputed, and the court had no choice but to convict,” said one of the prosecutors.

These convictions demonstrate the EFCC’s commitment to enforcing Nigeria’s cybercrime laws and ensuring that online fraud is met with tangible consequences.
