Gaël Clichy has backed Michael Olise to become France’s breakout star at the 2026 World Cup, comparing him to Kylian Mbappé’s 2018 rise

Former France defender Gaël Clichy has tipped Bayern Munich forward Michael Olise to emerge as France’s breakout star at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the attacker has the quality to shine on football’s biggest stage.

Olise heads into his first World Cup with rising expectations after establishing himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young attackers following his move to FC Bayern Munich.

The 24-year-old has become an increasingly important figure for both club and country, and Clichy believes the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico could mark his global breakthrough.

Speaking in comments reported by BBC Sport, Clichy drew comparisons with Kylian Mbappé’s explosive rise at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

“We knew Mbappé was a special talent before 2018, but that World Cup was when he truly arrived. I hope Michael can do something similar this summer,” Clichy said.

Although Olise is already recognised for his Champions League performances, he remains relatively new to the France senior setup, with limited international experience ahead of the tournament.

Clichy worked closely with Olise during the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he served as assistant coach to Thierry Henry and helped guide France’s Under-23 team to a silver medal finish.

The former Arsenal and Manchester City defender said Olise has grown significantly since his transfer from Crystal Palace to Bayern Munich, adding that consistency at club level will be key to his World Cup impact.

“I know how good he is and what a top person he is as well. If he brings the same level he has shown for Bayern Munich, then people will see he is one of the very best players France has,” he said.

Clichy also highlighted Rayan Cherki as another emerging French talent capable of influencing the tournament, praising his creativity and technical ability.

With established stars such as Mbappé leading the squad and rising talents like Olise and Cherki pushing for prominence, France are expected to remain strong contenders for the 2026 World Cup title.
