Chelle AFCON penalty defeat sees Nigeria lose to Morocco as coach defends players and insists penalties were well prepared

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle on Thursday defended his players after Nigeria lost 4–2 on penalties to hosts Morocco in the semi final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Casablanca.

Eric Chelle spoke after the goalless semi final ended in a shoot out defeat, denying Nigeria a place in a second consecutive AFCON final.

The match ended scoreless after regulation time and extra time before Morocco edged the contest through penalties.

Neil El Aynaoui converted Morocco’s opening kick before Paul Onuachu levelled for Nigeria.

Nigeria briefly gained an advantage when Stanley Nwabali saved Hamza Igamane’s effort.

Samuel Chukwueze, introduced late in extra time, failed to capitalise as his poorly struck kick was saved.

After goals from Ben Seghir and Fisayo Dele Bashiru, Achraf Hakimi restored Morocco’s lead.

Bruno Onyemaechi was then denied by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, allowing Youssef En Nesyri to seal victory.

The result sent Morocco into their first AFCON final since 2004 and kept them on course for a first continental title in 50 years.

Speaking after the match, Eric Chelle said the Super Eagles had prepared thoroughly for penalties.

Eric Chelle explained that the coaching staff selected the best available kickers based on recent performances.

The coach said the decision to introduce Moses Simon into midfield and Samuel Chukwueze late was influenced by tactical demands and the anticipated shoot out.

Eric Chelle admitted Nigeria struggled to match previous technical levels but praised the team’s resilience.

He said the players showed strong mental strength and fought throughout the contest despite fatigue.

The Chelle AFCON penalty defeat ended Nigeria’s hopes of a fourth continental title.

Nigeria last won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013.

The Super Eagles will now face Egypt in the third place play off on Saturday in Casablanca.
