Celtic begin contract talks with Kelechi Iheanacho after the Nigerian striker helped the club win a domestic double last season

Celtic Football Club have opened talks with Nigeria forward Kelechi Iheanacho over a new contract after his influential debut season helped the Scottish champions secure a domestic double.

The 29-year-old striker joined Celtic on a free transfer and quickly became an important figure in the squad, scoring decisive goals during the club’s successful campaign.

Iheanacho found the net in key matches against Kilmarnock, Dundee, Hibernian and Motherwell, helping the Hoops maintain their push for silverware.

Despite reported interest from clubs in Turkey, the former Manchester City forward is now expected to continue with Celtic, with manager Martin O’Neill confirming that the club wants to reach an agreement.

“I’d like to do something with him, (Iheanacho),” O’Neill said, according to Celtic Way.

“If we can do something relatively quickly, at least he then gets started in pre-season, which is really important for him. It’s something he didn’t have last year.”

The manager’s comments underline Celtic’s desire to secure Iheanacho’s future before the new season begins, allowing the striker to take part fully in pre-season preparations.

Iheanacho’s arrival proved a valuable move for Celtic after his departure from his previous club, giving the Scottish side an experienced attacking option with Premier League and international pedigree.
