In Vancouver on 19 June 2026, Canada delivered a stunning performance by thrashing Qatar 6-0 at BC Place Stadium to claim their first-ever victory at a World Cup finals.

The co-hosts, who had previously lost all six of their World Cup matches across the 1986 and 2022 tournaments, produced a dominant display that delighted a passionate home crowd, including Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Juventus striker Jonathan David led the rout with a brilliant hat-trick, while Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba added one goal each and Qatar’s Mohammad Manai scored an unfortunate own goal.

The emphatic win leaves Canada level on four points with Switzerland at the top of Group B, with a superior goal difference.

The only sour note came in the 51st minute when midfielder Ismael Kone suffered a serious left leg injury after a clumsy challenge by Qatar’s Assim Madibo.

Madibo was sent off, reducing Qatar to nine men after Homam el-Amin had earlier received a red card for denying a goalscoring opportunity.

Jonathan David expressed mixed emotions after the match. “It was a great game even before Kone got hurt, but I think after he got hurt it was tough to focus on the game,” he said. “We just wanted the game to end so we could all be together. It will take a few days to sink in but obviously we know that what we’ve done today is historical for the country.”

Canada now need only a point against Switzerland in their final group match on 24 June to top Group B and advance with momentum.

The result marks a significant milestone for Canadian football and provides a major boost for Jesse Marsch’s side, who have shown remarkable improvement since co-hosting the tournament.

In other Group B action earlier on Thursday, Switzerland reignited their campaign with a convincing 4-1 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina in Los Angeles.
