CAF has opened an investigation into alleged player, official, and media misconduct during AFCON 2025 quarter-finals, including Nigeria-Algeria and Morocco-Cameroon matches

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched an investigation into alleged misconduct by players, officials, and media personnel during the AFCON 2025 quarter-finals.

The probe focuses on clashes in the Nigeria vs Algeria and Morocco vs Cameroon fixtures.

CAF confirmed in a Monday statement that it has collected match reports and video evidence suggesting potentially unacceptable behaviour, and has referred the incidents to its Disciplinary Board for review.

“CAF has referred the matters to the Disciplinary Board for investigation and has called for appropriate action to be taken if the identified persons are found guilty of any wrongdoing,” the statement read.

“CAF is also reviewing footage of an incident involving members of the media who allegedly misbehaved in the mixed zone area.”

In Marrakech, Nigeria defeated Algeria 2-0 with goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams, securing a semi-final berth.

The match, however, ended in chaos as Algerian players confronted referees on the pitch, leading to scuffles and a prevented pitch invasion by fans.

The Algerian Football Federation has lodged a formal complaint, citing controversial decisions by Senegalese referee Issa Sy, including a denied penalty for a potential handball in the Nigerian box.

Meanwhile, Morocco beat Cameroon 2-0, but the match was also overshadowed by refereeing disputes. Cameroon argued that two penalty claims involving Moroccan defender Adam Masina were ignored.

Morocco coach Walid Regragui dismissed suggestions of home-team bias post-match.

CAF emphasized its commitment to professional conduct in all events.

“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organisers. Appropriate actions will be sought against anyone whose behaviour is not consistent with professional conduct at CAF events,” the statement added.
