West Ham United confirmed on Sunday in London, 30 November 2025, that former captain and manager Billy Bonds has died at 79, marking the beginning of a deeply emotional Billy Bonds farewell across the club and its fan base.

Bonds, West Ham’s longest-serving player, made 799 appearances over a 21-year spell and lifted the FA Cup in 1975 and 1980.

He also reached the 1976 European Cup Winners’ Cup final and later guided the club to two promotions during his managerial tenure.

His longevity and fierce commitment cemented him as one of the club’s most respected figures.

His family said he was devoted to them and to the club, describing him as kind, loyal and selfless.

They added that he treasured every moment he spent with supporters.

Their statement captured the warmth with which he was regarded across English football.

Bonds was voted West Ham’s greatest ever player, and a stand at the London Stadium carries his name.

The club said he was admired for his courage and humility, qualities that made him a powerful symbol of West Ham’s identity.

West Ham announced a period of appreciation before Sunday’s Premier League match against Liverpool and a full tribute before the fixture with Aston Villa on 14 December.

Former midfielder Joe Cole also shared a heartfelt message, saying Bonds embodied everything good about the club when he first arrived as a young player.
