Bayern Munich defeated Union Berlin 4-0 with Serge Gnabry scoring twice and Harry Kane moving closer to Robert Lewandowski’s Bundesliga single-season goal record

Bayern Munich secured a commanding 4-0 home win over Union Berlin on Saturday, as Serge Gnabry bagged a brace and Harry Kane inched closer to the Bundesliga single-season goals record.

Michael Olise also opened the scoring, breaking the deadlock in the 41st minute after converting a Leon Goretzka assist. Gnabry doubled the lead just before half-time, capitalising on a rebound at the far post.

Kane added Bayern’s third shortly after the break, moving to 31 Bundesliga goals for the season — the same number Union have scored collectively — and just 10 short of Robert Lewandowski’s 2020-21 record, with seven games remaining.

“It’s still possible, I just have to keep doing what I’m doing,” Kane said, acknowledging the potential to surpass Lewandowski’s mark.

Gnabry completed the scoring in the 67th minute with a precise volley, cementing Bayern’s 97-goal tally for the season — four shy of the record set in 1971-72 by Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Mueller.

Coach Vincent Kompany made five changes to the side that recently defeated Atalanta in the Champions League but retained Kane as the focal point of Bayern’s attack.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Bayer Leverkusen dropped points in a 3-3 draw at bottom-placed Heidenheim after leading 3-2 late in the match, while Werder Bremen edged Wolfsburg 1-0 to push the hosts closer to relegation.

Rhine Derby rivals Cologne and Borussia Moenchengladbach played out a 3-3 draw.

With the win, Bayern extend their Bundesliga lead to 12 points, though Borussia Dortmund could reduce the gap to nine with a late game against Hamburg.
