Calvin Bassey reaches 100 Premier League appearances for Nigerian players despite Fulham’s painful 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town
Fulham defender Calvin Bassey has joined the list of Nigerian footballers to make 100 appearances in the Premier League, reaching the milestone during his side’s 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Saturday, October 10, 2026.
The 26-year-old Nigeria international completed the full 90 minutes in the encounter, recording his sixth league appearance of the season despite Fulham’s late collapse.
Bassey is the 28th player to reach 100 league appearances for Fulham and the second Nigerian to achieve the feat for the London club, following his Super Eagles teammate Alex Iwobi, who has made 103 appearances for the team.
According to PUNCH Sports Extra, Bassey has scored three goals and provided one assist across his first 100 Premier League appearances, accumulating 8,411 minutes on the pitch.
His record across all competitions for Fulham stands at 108 appearances and four goals.
Bassey’s achievement adds his name to a group of Nigerian footballers who have established themselves in England’s top flight.
According to Transfermarkt, 16 Nigerian players had reached the 100-appearance mark before the Fulham defender.
Iwobi leads the list with 320 Premier League appearances, followed by former Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi with 299 and Nigerian legend Nwankwo Kanu with 272.
Yakubu Aiyegbeni has recorded 252 appearances, while former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel made 249.
Other Nigerians on the list include Joseph Yobo, with 228 appearances; Wilfred Ndidi and Victor Moses, with 220 each; and Kelechi Iheanacho, with 196.
Former Bolton Wanderers and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Jay-Jay Okocha made 124 appearances, while Ola Aina has recorded 109.
Bassey’s landmark underlines his progress since moving to English football, having previously featured for Leicester City’s academy, Scottish side Rangers and Dutch club Ajax.
Bassey developed through Leicester City’s academy before moving to Rangers, where he made 65 appearances. He subsequently played 39 times for Ajax before joining Fulham in July 2023.
Since arriving at Craven Cottage, the defender has continued to feature in the Premier League, earning regular opportunities in the Fulham backline.
His 100th league appearance, however, came on a frustrating afternoon for the club.
Fulham appeared on course for their first league victory of the season when Ryan Sessegnon scored in the 55th minute.
Ipswich responded late in the match, with Abdoul Ouattara equalising in the 88th minute before captain Dara O’Shea scored in the 92nd minute to complete the turnaround.
Iwobi also started the match, making his sixth league appearance of the campaign before being replaced by Emile Smith Rowe in the 87th minute.
The defeat left Fulham in the relegation zone with two points from six matches, increasing the pressure on head coach Álvaro Arbeloa as he continued his search for a first win in charge.
Despite the disappointing result, Bassey’s personal milestone marked a significant moment in his Premier League career and further strengthened the Nigerian presence in the competition.
