Bamidele Akingboye death confirmed as SDP’s 2024 Ondo governorship candidate passes away in Lagos. Family requests privacy

Akingboye reportedly died earlier in the day at his residence in Victoria Garden City, Lagos. The news was announced by his aide, Oyeniyi Iwakun, who released an official statement on behalf of the family.

“Known for his unwavering integrity, humility, and generosity, Akingboye left an indelible mark as a successful businessman and a mentor to many across Nigeria and beyond,” the statement read.

He is survived by his wives, children, grandchildren, and siblings.

The family has requested privacy during this period of mourning, noting that burial arrangements and further details will be made public soon.

Akingboye’s death comes less than a year after he contested the November 16, 2024, Ondo State governorship election, where he ran under the SDP platform.

He lost the election to the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate and incumbent governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Following the poll, Akingboye and the SDP strongly contested the outcome, alleging widespread irregularities, voter intimidation, and harassment of party agents.

He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to cancel the election, citing electoral malpractice and a lack of transparency.

Though unsuccessful at the polls, Akingboye remained a prominent figure in Ondo politics and was respected for his bold stance on good governance and electoral fairness.

His death is seen as a significant loss not only to the SDP but to the political landscape of Ondo State.

Political associates and supporters have taken to social media to express their shock and pay tribute to the late businessman-turned-politician.
