Diego Simeone says Atletico Madrid were better than Arsenal after a 1-1 Champions League semi-final first leg draw, despite missed chances

The Atlético boss said the contest was evenly balanced in the opening period but argued that his side took control after the restart, creating stronger attacking opportunities and showing greater organisation defensively.

Diego Simeone noted that while Arsenal FC enjoyed more possession in the first half, they failed to create clear chances, allowing Atlético to grow into the match.

He also praised Arsenal’s impact from the bench but maintained that his team remained dominant in key phases after adjusting tactically.

Atlético Madrid had chances to win the match but were left frustrated by missed opportunities, with Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman particularly wasteful in front of goal.

Ademola Lookman was heavily involved in Atlético’s attacking play, finding space in dangerous positions but failing to convert several key chances, including efforts saved by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya and others fired off target.

Despite the missed opportunities, Atlético took the lead through a second-half penalty from Julián Álvarez, before Arsenal FC equalised via Viktor Gyökeres to ensure the tie remains finely poised.

With the aggregate score level heading into the second leg at the Emirates Stadium, Simeone warned that Atlético’s inability to capitalise on their dominance could prove costly in the decisive fixture.
