Atletico Madrid beat Osasuna 2-1 as Ademola Lookman scored, while Real Betis secured Champions League qualification after victory over Elche

Atletico Madrid strengthened their hold on fourth place in La Liga with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Osasuna on Tuesday, in a result that keeps their Champions League hopes firmly on track.

The Atletico Madrid Osasuna victory saw Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman open the scoring from the penalty spot in the 15th minute after Javi Galán was penalised for handball.

Atletico Madrid continued to assert control in the first half, with Alexander Sørloth doubling the lead 20 minutes from time through a close-range header past Aitor Fernández.

The match was briefly complicated for Diego Simeone’s side after Marcos Llorente was shown a red card following two cautions for reckless challenges.

Osasuna reduced the deficit in injury time through Kike Barja, but Atletico held firm to secure a vital three points.

The result leaves Atletico Madrid fourth on 66 points, behind newly crowned champions Barcelona on 91 points, Real Madrid on 77 points and Villarreal on 69, with all three ahead having a game in hand.

Elsewhere, Real Betis secured a historic milestone by defeating Elche 2-1, a result that guaranteed them a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

The Real Betis victory marks their first qualification for Europe’s elite club competition since the 2005-06 season, ending a long absence from the top tier of European football.

Betis currently sit on 57 points, seven ahead of sixth-placed Celta Vigo, effectively sealing their top-five finish and Champions League return.

The Spanish league continues to deliver intense battles both at the top and bottom of the table, with relegation and European qualification still tightly contested.
