Atiku Abubakar denies social media claims that he gifted a Toyota SUV to Lt. Ahmed Yerima, the naval officer who clashed with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike

Atiku Abubakar has firmly denied reports claiming he gifted a brand-new Toyota SUV to Lieutenant Ahmed Yerima, the naval officer recently involved in a confrontation with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

In a statement released on Thursday via Atiku’s verified X handle, his media adviser, Paul Ibe, described the viral report as “completely false and without any factual basis,” urging Nigerians to dismiss it as fake news.

“His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, Vice President of Nigeria (1999–2007), did not gift Lt. Ahmed Yerima — or any other individual — a brand new Toyota SUV, contrary to the false reports currently circulating on social media. The story is entirely fabricated and should be disregarded by the public,” Ibe said.

The viral claim, which surfaced on Facebook on Wednesday, alleged that Atiku rewarded the naval officer following his encounter with Minister Wike during an inspection at a disputed plot of land in Gaduwa District, Abuja.

A video of the confrontation showed Wike and Lt. Yerima in a heated exchange, with the officer insisting he was protecting naval property.

The clip quickly spread across social media, drawing divided reactions from Nigerians.

The incident has sparked debate among political observers, with figures such as former Chief of Army Staff Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd) calling for restraint and respect for institutional boundaries.
