Arokodare stars as Ajax beat Telstar 4-0, with the Nigerian scoring his first Eredivisie goal and continuing an impressive start in Amsterdam

Tolu Arokodare, the Nigeria international and Ajax forward, and Míchel Sánchez, Ajax head coach, helped Ajax secure an emphatic 4-0 victory over Telstar at the BUKO Stadion in Velsen-Zuid on Sunday, August 30, 2026, with Arokodare scoring his first Eredivisie goal to underline his encouraging start in the Netherlands.

The 25-year-old striker struck in the 60th minute as Ajax turned a competitive first half into a convincing away victory. Arokodare completed the full 90 minutes as four different Ajax players found the net.

Davy Klaassen opened the scoring in the 37th minute, giving Ajax a deserved lead after the visitors had controlled much of the early possession without finding a breakthrough.

Steven Berghuis doubled the advantage 11 minutes after half-time before Arokodare added the third five minutes later.

Berghuis played a central role in the move, providing his second assist of the afternoon for Arokodare, who finished to put Ajax firmly in command.

Marcos Leonardo completed the scoring in the 78th minute, securing a clean sheet and an impressive four-goal margin for Sánchez’s side.

For Arokodare, the afternoon represented another significant step in his adaptation to one of Europe’s most historic clubs.

The Nigerian has now scored in three consecutive appearances for Ajax, continuing a rapid adjustment since arriving from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a season-long loan.

Ajax completed the deal in July, with the agreement including an option for the Dutch club to sign Arokodare permanently next summer.

Arokodare joined Wolves in September 2025 after establishing himself in Belgium with Genk. During his single season at Molineux, he made 38 appearances and scored six goals, including three in the Premier League.

His move to Ajax has given him a fresh opportunity to establish himself at a club renowned for developing attacking talent.

At 1.97 metres, Arokodare offers Sánchez a different physical profile in attack, combining his height and strength with the mobility required to operate in Ajax’s forward line.

That combination was one of the reasons Ajax pursued the Nigerian forward after the departure of Wout Weghorst and uncertainty surrounding Kasper Dolberg’s future.

Arokodare’s arrival has also added another Nigerian connection to Ajax, a club with a particularly rich history of Nigerian players, including Nwankwo Kanu and Tijjani Babangida.

The striker himself has spoken warmly about the significance of joining the Amsterdam giants.

“Everyone in Nigeria knows Ajax,” Arokodare said after completing his move, describing the transfer as an opportunity he had not expected earlier in his career.

Sunday’s performance offered further evidence that the forward is beginning to settle quickly.

Ajax had to be patient against Telstar, with Klaassen’s goal arriving only eight minutes before half-time. The visitors then found greater fluency after the break, scoring three times to turn the contest into a comfortable victory.

The result was particularly useful for Ajax after the club secured its place in the UEFA Conference League league phase. Sánchez’s side can now carry their positive momentum into the next stage of the domestic and European campaign.

The victory also highlighted Ajax’s attacking depth. Four different players scored, with Berghuis contributing a goal and two assists while Klaassen, Arokodare and Leonardo each added one goal.

For Arokodare, however, the significance of the afternoon goes beyond the scoreline.

His first Eredivisie goal gives him an important landmark at the beginning of his Ajax career, while his continued run of scoring appearances strengthens the case for greater responsibility in Sánchez’s attack.
