Arbeloa oversaw a 4-2 victory for Real Madrid against Athletic Club on the final day of the 2025/26 LaLiga season, bringing his short spell as interim manager to a close.

The former Spain international stepped into the role after the club parted ways with Xabi Alonso in January but was unable to guide Los Blancos to silverware in either LaLiga or the UEFA Champions League.

Real Madrid were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals and later saw their domestic title hopes collapse following a 2-0 defeat to Barcelona in El Clasico.

The season marked a rare trophyless campaign for the club, with pressure mounting on the hierarchy as reports link José Mourinho with a potential return to the dugout.

Before the final match, Arbeloa confirmed his decision to leave his post, prompting emotional reactions from several players after the full-time whistle.

Gonzalo Garcia, who scored in the win over Athletic Club, shared a heartfelt message on Instagram praising Arbeloa’s guidance and mentorship across both academy and senior levels.

Responding to the tribute, Arbeloa admitted he wished he had treated the young forward more fairly, describing him as more than just a player under his leadership.

“Thank you so much, Gon. You’ve been much more than just a player for me. I wish I had been more fair with you. Go show all your worth,” he said.
