Apapa Customs intercepts codeine syrup worth N3.39bn, seizing 3,398 cartons hidden in household items in collaboration with NDLEA

The Apapa Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted a massive consignment of codeine syrup valued at N3.39 billion, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The seizure was carried out in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), according to Mr Isa Sulaiman, Public Relations Officer of the command.

Customs Area Controller Mr Emmanuel Oshoba disclosed that the operation occurred on Sunday, 15 March 2026, as part of a rapid follow-up enforcement action.

“The consignment, comprising 3,398 cartons, was meticulously concealed inside household utensils. Its duty value is estimated at N3.39 billion,” Oshoba stated, highlighting the scale of the seizure.

Oshoba added that the interception reflects the command’s commitment to the strategic directives of the NCS.

“This operation demonstrates our intelligence-led approach and our dedication to making Apapa Port extremely hostile to smugglers and drug traffickers,” he said.

The seizure followed a visit to the Apapa Command by NCS Comptroller-General Mr Bashir Adeniyi, who had issued stern warnings to criminal elements operating within the port.

Oshoba also commended the NDLEA for its seamless support, noting that coordinated enforcement was key to the operation’s success.
