Alex Iwobi Premier League record joy as Fulham and Super Eagles star reflects on his milestone, team unity, and Nigeria’s World Cup hopes

Alex Iwobi Premier League record continues to make headlines as the Fulham midfielder reflects on joining Shola Ameobi as the Nigerian with the most appearances in the English top flight.

Speaking with SuperSport, Iwobi described the achievement as “amazing” and an honour he never takes for granted. “It’s honestly amazing to almost be the single most capped Nigerian in the EPL,” he said.

“I don’t really think about it much, but when I talk with my family afterwards, I realise I’ve played a lot of games. It’s an honour to be among the most capped Nigerians in the Premier League.”

Iwobi praised Ameobi as “a big legend” and expressed optimism about surpassing his record soon. “Hopefully, I’ve got many more years ahead to set the record with greater numbers,” he added with a smile.

The Super Eagles playmaker also discussed Nigeria’s World Cup ambition, expressing belief that the team has what it takes to qualify. “Of course, we believe that we’re going to go to the World Cup; otherwise, we wouldn’t be here,” he said. “We’ll do our best and hope the fans continue to believe in us.”

On life at Fulham, Iwobi said he feels at home with fellow Super Eagles stars Calvin Bassey and Samuel Chukwueze in the squad. “It’s nice to have Samuel join us, not just because he’s Nigerian but because he’s a great player and a great person. We’re technically Naija FC now,” he joked.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s strong representation in the Premier League, Iwobi said it’s not about carrying the national flag alone but about building camaraderie. “It’s just nice to have another brother added to our team,” he said warmly.

Looking ahead to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Fulham star expressed hunger for success. “You’d want to win, obviously. You’d want to improve on the last one, and the only way to improve is to win it,” he affirmed.

Iwobi also recalled the defining Premier League moment that inspired his football journey watching his uncle and Nigerian legend, Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha, during his Bolton days.

“I remember a match when he ran from one end of the pitch to the other and smashed it into the top corner. I thought, ‘One day I want to be like my uncle – or even better.’ That moment inspired me.”
