Alan Shearer England World Cup squad warning as Newcastle legend predicts surprise omissions from Thomas Tuchel’s final selection

Former England striker and Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has issued a stark warning over potential omissions from England manager Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad, suggesting that several high-profile players could miss out when the final list is announced.

Shearer made the comments during an interview with Metro, where he assessed England’s selection dilemmas ahead of Friday’s expected squad announcement.

Alan Shearer delivers England World Cup squad warning centred on Arsenal youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly, whom the former striker believes may be among those left out despite showing strong late-season form under Mikel Arteta.

Lewis-Skelly, who previously scored the first goal of the Tuchel era against Albania, has struggled for consistent playing time at Arsenal earlier in the season, a factor Shearer suggested could weigh heavily against him.

However, the teenager’s recent resurgence in midfield alongside Declan Rice has added complexity to Tuchel’s selection decisions, with versatility seen as a potential advantage.

Shearer also highlighted the intense competition in defensive positions, noting that England’s left-back and centre-back roles remain highly contested ahead of the tournament.

He pointed to players such as Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento and Nico O’Reilly as strong contenders, while also suggesting that experience could favour John Stones and Ezri Konsa in central defence.

In another notable prediction, Shearer suggested that Manchester United defender Harry Maguire could miss out, with Nottingham Forest’s Dan Burn possibly edging selection due to familiarity gained in England training camps.

The comments come amid wider reports that several established names, including Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Morgan Gibbs-White, could also be at risk of exclusion from Tuchel’s final squad.
