Abia JUSUN strike begins indefinitely as judiciary staff protest unresolved welfare and independence issues with the state government

The Abia State chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, commenced an indefinite strike on Monday, March 16, 2026, following directives from the union’s executive members.

Prince Chinedu Ezeh, Abia JUSUN chairman, and Chubueze Nwachukwu, state secretary, said the strike is a response to the state government’s alleged failure to address the issues highlighted in the union’s March 15 final ultimatum.

The Abia JUSUN executives stated that the industrial action is aimed at protecting the welfare of members and safeguarding the independence of the judiciary.

Reporters who visited the Abia State High Court complex in Umuahia observed confusion among lawyers and clients who had scheduled matters, with many unsure how to proceed due to the sudden strike.

A police patrol vehicle was stationed at the High Court premises to maintain order.

A notice posted on the main gate of the Umuahia High Court confirmed that the indefinite strike had been approved by the national office of JUSUN, led by Marwan Mustapha.

The message was signed by M.J. Akwashiki, acting General Secretary of the union.

Legal observers noted that the strike could significantly disrupt court proceedings in Abia State until negotiations between the union and government resume.
