According to FIFA’s post-group stage report, the competition has attracted 4.64 million fans across 72 matches, making it the most attended World Cup on record, while maintaining an average of three goals per game in a tournament defined by attacking football and dramatic knockout progression.

The 2026 World Cup records list has been dominated by established stars extending their legacies. Argentina captain Lionel Messi reached a landmark moment by becoming the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches, while also being credited with surpassing previous scoring benchmarks to become the tournament’s all-time leading scorer with 19 goals.

Messi also achieved another historic milestone, becoming the oldest player to score a World Cup hat-trick at 38 years and 357 days, overtaking Cristiano Ronaldo’s previous record in the process.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo also made history, becoming his nation’s all-time leading World Cup scorer with 10 goals, overtaking legendary forward Eusébio.

The 41-year-old also extended his unique record of scoring in the most World Cup editions, finding the net across six separate tournaments, a feat unmatched in men’s football.

Elsewhere, France forward Kylian Mbappé continued his rapid rise on the global stage, becoming Europe’s all-time leading World Cup scorer with 18 goals, while England captain Harry Kane set a national record with 11 World Cup goals, moving ahead of Gary Lineker.

The tournament has also produced breakthrough moments for emerging nations. Morocco’s Ismael Saibari became the first African player to score in three consecutive World Cup matches, while Cabo Verde’s Kevin Pina etched his name into history by scoring the country’s first-ever World Cup goal.

In goalkeeping, Spain’s Unai Simón set a new benchmark with a record 519-minute World Cup clean-sheet streak, surpassing a long-standing mark set by Walter Zenga.
