Erling Haaland urges Man City to stay united amid a financial crisis as the club faces potential Premier League sanctions over rule breaches
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has urged his teammates to remain united and positive as the club faces uncertainty following an independent commission’s guilty verdict over breaches of Premier League financial rules.
The Norwegian forward said the squad must support one another and focus on winning matches as the reigning English football giants await the consequences of the ruling.
City face the prospect of severe sanctions, including a substantial points deduction or possible expulsion from the Premier League, after the commission found the club guilty of more than 100 charges relating to financial regulations.
The case centres on alleged financial misconduct between 2009 and 2018, with the commission finding that the club used what it described as “sham” commercial contracts to inflate revenue and reduce costs by more than £900 million.
Haaland, who joined City in 2022, was not at the club during the period covered by the charges. However, the current squad could be affected by any punishment imposed.
“We have to stay positive, look ahead and try to win football games and try to enjoy the situation and win the game,” Haaland told the club’s website.
“We have to stick together, and we have to spread the love to each other.
“So yeah, stick together, enjoy the ride and smile.”
The striker’s comments come as City prepare to return to competitive action against Liverpool on Sunday, in their first match since the guilty verdict was revealed.
The uncertainty surrounding the club has raised questions about its immediate future, with the potential consequences extending beyond the current season.
Despite the pressure, Haaland has urged his teammates to concentrate on football and maintain a positive atmosphere within the dressing room.
The 26-year-old has established himself as one of Europe’s most prolific forwards since arriving at the Etihad Stadium, scoring 169 goals in 205 appearances for City.
His performances have made him a key figure in the club’s attack, and his long-term commitment was reinforced when he signed a contract extension running until 2034 last year.
However, the severity of any eventual sanction could influence the club’s future plans and the decisions of players considering their long-term prospects.
Haaland also expressed his emotional connection to the club and its supporters, saying he understood their concerns during the uncertain period.
“I care a lot about City, I have to say,” he added.
“I care a lot about the fans because I’m a fan myself — I feel with them as well.”
The forward’s comments underline the importance of maintaining unity between the players and supporters while the club navigates the fallout from the ruling.
City’s potential punishment could have significant implications for their domestic and European ambitions. A points deduction or expulsion from the Premier League would represent a major setback for a club that has established itself among English football’s leading sides.
Haaland has also enjoyed success on the international stage, helping Norway secure a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.
For now, the striker’s message is one of solidarity, with City expected to focus on their remaining fixtures while awaiting further developments in the financial case.
